Our story

We dreamed up a Belgian bistro on the banks of the Danube, in a slightly different way than the ordinary meaning of the word!

A bistro, where friends and acquaintances meet, discuss their troubles, share their joys, where you can chat with the barman or barmaid, where you can stop by for a coffee, a beer, a wine, or a nice meal.

The Port Beer & food is an unique place – Belgian Beer Budapest - where you can find a large selection of Belgian beers, including ones that you can only taste here in Hungary.

The wonderful panorama of the Danube makes the stay even more enjoyable for our guests and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions about Belgian Beers

If you are looking for a true Belgian beer experience in a stunning environment, visit the Port Beer & Food restaurant! Located in Budapest’s 1st district, at 1 Halász utca, right on the Danube bank, we await you with an incredible selection of Belgian abbey, Trappist, blonde, brown, and cherry beers, along with a magnificent view of the Parliament and the Chain Bridge.

What is Belgian beer, and what makes Belgian beer culture so special?

Belgian beer is not just a drink, but an art form based on centuries of tradition, which has been declared part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Its uniqueness lies in its incredible diversity, the use of unique yeast strains, higher alcohol content, and distinct seasoning techniques. At Port Beer & Food, we bring this authentic tradition straight to the heart of Budapest.

Why is the alcohol content of Belgian beers higher than average beers?

The higher alcohol content is thanks to traditional Belgian brewing techniques. During the brewing process, more malt (or sometimes pure candi sugar) is used, which means more fermentable sugar for the yeast. Additionally, many Belgian beers undergo secondary fermentation in the bottle or keg, further increasing their complexity and strength.

What are the most popular Belgian cherry and fruit beers?

The base of Belgian fruit beers is traditionally made from spontaneously fermented beers (Lambic) or brown ales, to which real fruit or fruit extracts are added. In our selection—one of the largest in Budapest—you can find crowd-favorite Belgian cherry beers (e.g., Kasteel Rouge, Delirium Red, Lindemans Kriek), which serve as the perfect refreshment alongside the Danube panorama.

What foods pair best with Belgian beers? (Food pairing)

The culinary value of Belgian beers rivals that of wines. Light wheat beers are excellent with poultry and salads, the fuller-bodied Dubbels and Tripels perfectly complement traditional Hungarian dishes, beef stew, steaks, and premium burgers, while fruit beers are brilliant accompaniments to desserts. We’ve designed our menu so you can taste perfect beer-and-food pairings.

What does it mean for a Belgian beer to be Trappist (Trappist ale)?

Trappist beers are among the most exclusive, strictly regulated beverages in the world. A beer can only receive the "Authentic Trappist Product" certification if it is brewed within a real Trappist monastery, under the direct supervision of the monks. Most of the proceeds are donated to charity. At us, right at the foot of the Chain Bridge, you can choose from the most famous Trappist beers (e.g., Chimay, Westmalle, La Trappe).

Why does every Belgian beer have its own unique glass?

Serving beer in Belgium is a true ritual. Every beer style has its own uniquely shaped glass (chalice, tulip, or tumbler), which is specifically designed to maximize the beer's aromas, flavors, and to retain its head. At Port Beer & Food, we serve every Belgian beer specialty in its own authentic, factory glass for the perfect experience.
